August 20, (THEWILL) — Nigerian singer and songwriter WurlD has explained how Davido came to release his hit song “Blow My Mind” featuring American singer Chris Brown.
Speaking on The Afropolitan Podcast, WurlD said he originally wrote the song for himself and was not thinking about another artist when he created it.
“There are different scenarios. A song like ‘Blow My Mind’, for example, I didn’t think about it for anyone but myself. It just happened to be Davido releasing the record,” he said.
WurlD explained that there are different ways songs are created and shared between artists. He said he sometimes works directly with artists to help them create songs based on their personal experiences.
“Sometimes you work with an artist directly, sometimes you help them craft the record,” he said.
He explained that such collaborations involve understanding what an artist is going through and creating something that feels personal to them.
“It’s like, what are you going through, what are we talking about that you would sing about that you would feel, like it’s yours, not like WurlD wrote this for me from WurlD’s perspective,” he said.
According to WurlD, the conversation that eventually led to Davido recording “Blow My Mind” was simply a general discussion about music.
“The ‘Blow My Mind’ conversation was general. There’s no right or wrong in creating music,” he said.
The singer added that he is open to supporting other artistes when they connect with songs he creates from his own perspective.
“Most of the time I create music, I’m creating it from my perspective. If the business in the conversation ends up being with another artist, I’m always open to support,” he said.
WurlD has previously spoken about how “Blow My Mind” eventually got to Davido.
In a 2020 interview, he revealed that he had worked on the song with other artistes before Shizzi reached out to him about Davido recording it.
Davido released the song featuring Chris Brown in July 2019, and it went on to become one of his biggest international hits.
WurlD has consistently maintained that he wrote the song for himself and did not specifically create it for Davido. His latest comments offer another explanation of a story he has shared publicly before.

The singer also discussed the challenges artists and producers face with music publishing and royalties.
WurlD said that early in his career, he noticed that many African producers had limited knowledge of the business side of music, including publishing, IPI numbers, and how to protect their rights.
He began helping producers understand how to manage their music rights and claim the royalties they were owed.
However, he said this also exposed cases where people allegedly registered songs under their own names and collected money meant for the actual creators.
WurlD said he later discovered a similar problem in his own records after checking his royalty information and finding another person’s name listed as his publisher.
According to him, several years of his music earnings had already been paid out through the incorrect publishing information.
He also discovered that some producers he had worked with were not properly registered.
WurlD said speaking up about these issues and helping creators protect their earnings came at a cost, as he ended up making “some enemies” in the music industry.
