Manuel Neuer has returned to training with his Bayern Munich teammates for the first time since breaking his lower right leg in December.
August 28, (THEWILL) – The German international missed a large portion of last season and the start of the current campaign due to the injury. Neuer took part in a training session with the club’s other goalkeepers on Monday, which Bayern described as “good news” and the “next step” in the keeper’s recovery.
There have been calls for the 36-year-old to step down from the German national team, but Neuer has insisted he will make a full return to action. The club also officially unveiled new signing Daniel Peretz on Monday. The Israeli goalkeeper signed a five-year contract after joining from Maccabi Tel Aviv. He became the first Israeli player in Bayern’s history.
Speaking at his introductory press conference, Peretz made it clear he intends to challenge Neuer and current backup Sven Ulreich for the starting spot between the sticks. “I obviously want to play and will train as well as possible to show the coach what I can do,” the new signing stated.
Neuer’s return will come as a major boost to Bayern, who have struggled defensively in recent weeks. Manager Thomas Tuchel will be hoping the German number one can regain full fitness and reclaim his place as soon as possible.
