August 22, (THEWILL) — Leon Goretzka could be set for a new challenge in the Premier League after he departs from Bayern Munich, with reports suggesting that talks are underway over a possible move to England.

The Germany international became a free agent after his contract with Bayern expired at the end of last season, ending an eight-year stay at the Allianz Arena.

Goretzka’s availability has naturally attracted interest, given his experience at the highest level of European football and his record of success with both club and country.

Now, a move to the Premier League appears to be a realistic possibility.

According to reports, Aston Villa have opened discussions over a potential deal for the 31-year-old as Unai Emery looks to add further quality and experience to his midfield options.

Villa’s interest comes after a busy transfer window in which the club has seen several important players depart while continuing to reshape their squad ahead of another demanding campaign.

Goretzka joined Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2018 and went on to become a key figure during one of the most successful periods of his career.

Across eight seasons, he made 312 appearances for the Bavarian giants and scored 51 goals from midfield.

His time in Munich also brought seven Bundesliga titles, giving him the experience of competing regularly for major domestic and European honours.

However, his Bayern career came to an end after the club decided not to offer him a new contract.

Since becoming available on a free transfer on June 30, Goretzka has been weighing up his next move.

Despite being 31, the midfielder remains an attractive option for clubs seeking a proven and physically imposing player with significant experience at the top level.

Aston Villa had reportedly considered another former Bayern midfielder, Joao Palhinha, as they searched for reinforcements in the middle of the pitch.

However, Palhinha has since moved to Benfica, forcing Villa to look elsewhere.

That search has reportedly led them to Goretzka.

Villa’s need for another midfield option has grown following Youri Tielemans’ departure to Manchester United in a £35 million move.

Although the club responded by signing Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves, Emery’s options were further affected when Amadou Onana suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury while on World Cup duty.

The combination of a major departure and a serious injury has left Villa looking for additional depth as they prepare for a campaign that could place significant demands on the squad.

Goretzka would bring something Villa’s midfield may currently lack: extensive experience of competing under pressure at the highest level.

The German has played regularly in the Champions League and has spent years competing for titles with Bayern Munich.

His physicality could also make him well suited to the demands of English football, while his ability to contribute goals from midfield would provide another attacking option for Emery.

Villa have already been active in the transfer market as they prepare for their return to the Champions League.

In addition to Gomes, the club has added Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg and Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid.

Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has also arrived after a proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain failed to materialise, while Alejandro Garnacho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have joined the club on loan.

Those arrivals have followed the departures of several established players, including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne, as Villa continue to rebuild their squad.

The potential addition of Goretzka would represent another significant step in that process.

While no agreement has yet been announced, reports that discussions are taking place suggest that Villa are seriously considering the former Bayern Munich star.

For Goretzka, a move to the Premier League would offer the opportunity to test himself in a new environment after spending his entire senior club career in Germany.

His next destination is yet to be confirmed, but with Aston Villa reportedly in talks, the possibility of seeing the seven-time Bundesliga winner in English football is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

The coming days could determine whether Goretzka’s long wait for a new club ends with a move that would bring one of Germany’s most experienced midfielders to the Premier League.
