September 10, (THEWILL) – Harry Kane etched his name further into Champions League history on Thursday night, scoring his 55th goal in the competition as Bayern Munich made light work of Bodo/Glimt in a 5-0 victory to open their new European campaign.
Vincent Kompany’s side, who reached the semi-finals of the competition last season, were made to work for their breakthrough against a well-organised Bodo/Glimt side that showed genuine resistance through the opening 45 minutes at the Allianz Arena.
The Norwegian visitors held firm defensively and even threatened a moment of real quality, with Andreas Helmersen spotting goalkeeper Manuel Neuer off his line midway through the second half and attempting an audacious lob from inside his own half, only to see the ball drift agonisingly onto the top of the net rather than in.
By that point, however, Bayern were already well on their way to victory. Jamal Musiala, making his first start of the season, broke the deadlock just after the restart when Kane’s initial effort deflected kindly into his path.
The goal carried extra weight beyond simply putting Bayern ahead, marking the club’s 900th goal in the history of the Champions League, a tally surpassed by only Real Madrid across the competition’s entire history.
Kane himself got on the scoresheet shortly afterward, rising to head home from a free-kick to make it 2-0 and bring up his 55th Champions League goal.
The milestone puts him alongside an elite group of the competition’s most prolific scorers, and remarkably, only two players have reached the same tally in fewer appearances than Kane’s 71: Erling Haaland, who got there in just 49 matches, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who needed 70.
It also extended Kane’s remarkable scoring form for his club specifically, taking him to 34 European goals in just 39 appearances since joining Bayern.

Bayern continued to pull away as the game progressed, with Alphonso Davies adding a third in spectacular fashion, drilling a rocket of a finish in from the edge of the box.
Michael Olise then got in on the act himself, curling a neat finish into the top corner to make it four and put the result beyond any realistic doubt.
Bodo/Glimt’s night went from difficult to worse in the closing stages when defender Odin Bjortuft was shown a red card for a foul on Olise, reducing the visitors to ten men.
Bayern made the most of the extra space that followed, with Olise completing his brace in stoppage time to round off a thoroughly one-sided scoreline.
The result gives Bayern the perfect start to a campaign in which they’ll be aiming to go one step further than last season’s semi-final exit, and with Kane continuing to break records at a remarkable rate, Kompany’s side will fancy their chances of doing exactly that if this kind of form continues throughout the competition.
