September 20, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich edged past Manchester United in an eventful UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night, winning 4-3 at the Allianz Arena.
In a game full of incident, the German champions took control in the first half before having to withstand a late rally from the visitors to secure the three points in Group A. The opener came midway through the first half when Leroy Sane scored through an error from United goalkeeper Andre Onana to give Bayern the lead. Serge Gnabry doubled their advantage soon after following good work down the left from Jamal Musiala.
United looked to be on the ropes, but a goal from new signing Rasmus Hojlund gave them hope early in the second period. Harry Kane restored Bayern’s two-goal cushion from the penalty spot after a VAR review for handball against Christian Eriksen. Casemiro set up a tense finish with two late goals for United, but substitute Mathys Tel struck in between to make it 4-2.
Although Casemiro grabbed another in injury time, Bayern held on for the win. Despite periods of United pressure, Bayern’s attacking quality proved the difference. Sane, Gnabry, Musiala and Kane all impressed, with the English striker involved in two goals. At the other end, Onana will be disappointed with his error for the opener, while United’s defense struggled to contain the Bayern attack.
In the end, Bayern’s firepower up front ensured they edged a high-scoring contest between two European heavyweights. The win gives the German side early control of Group A, while United face an uphill battle after losing their opening fixture. Both teams now switch focus back to domestic action this weekend, with Bayern at home to Bochum and United away at Burnley.
