PDP Vows To Unseat 25 Rivers Defected Lawmakers, Writes INEC, Begins Legal Action

December 14, (THEWILL) – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to take every necessary action available in a democracy to unseat the 25 defected lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Consequently, the Party said on Wednesday that it has “formally” informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the 25 vacant seats in the Rivers Assembly.

THEWILL had reported that 27 lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Matthew Amaewhule, on Monday, dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, two of the defected lawmakers have reportedly returned to the PDP.

Speaker of the State Assembly, Edison Ehie, on Wednesday, declared vacant the seats of the 25 defectors.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP asked INEC to conduct elections in the affected constituencies.

The statement signed by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, directed its National Legal Adviser to commence appropriate legal action with respect to the declaration of the seats of the 25 defected former members vacant and the conduct of fresh election into the 25 State Constituencies.

The statement reads: “The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) @OfficialPDPNig at its 580th meeting on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, thoroughly reviewed the state of the Party in Rivers State, particularly with regard to the defection of 25 now former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly from the PDP, the political platform upon which they were elected into the House, and resolved as follows;
