August 30, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced on Tuesday, that Bruno Labbadia would become the new head coach of the Super Eagles. However, the deal has now collapsed due to disagreements over tax payment terms.
Labbadia, a 58-year-old German tactician with experience managing several Bundesliga clubs, was set to lead Nigeria in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda in September. The NFF stated that while an initial agreement had been reached, Labbadia’s request for his taxes to be paid in both Nigeria and Germany led to the breakdown in negotiations.
The timing of this withdrawal has left the NFF disappointed, as it comes just one week before Nigeria’s crucial matches. The Federation is now likely to shift its focus to other potential candidates for the position.
Many Nigerian football fans had expressed concerns about Labbadia’s appointment, citing his lack of significant managerial achievements and limited experience at the international level. The Super Eagles are scheduled to host Benin on September 9 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, followed by an away match against Rwanda on September 12.
With the coaching situation unresolved, the NFF faces a race against time to find a suitable replacement before these important fixtures. The Federation will need to act swiftly to ensure the team has proper leadership and preparation for the upcoming qualifiers.
