August 18, (THEWILL) — Afrobeats star Davido has expressed confidence in the strength of his music catalogue, saying he could take a 10-year break and still return to sell out 50 arenas.
He made the comments during a recent episode of The Uncut Podcast, where he discussed his plans for the later stages of his music career and the importance of building a life beyond the spotlight.
“I can take a 10-year break, come back, and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue. I might decide not to make another song for the rest of my life, and nobody is touching my catalogue,” Davido said.
He pointed to American rapper and businessman Jay-Z as an example, noting that the veteran artist took a break from music and continued building his career outside the recording studio.
The singer also said he and his contemporaries should begin making room for younger artistes within the next five to six years.
“This is me and my contemporaries’ last 5–6 years. I am not going to be 40, still dragging the spotlight with guys in their 20s,” he said.
Davido clarified that he was not announcing an immediate retirement.
Instead, he said veteran artistes should eventually step back from the centre of the music scene and explore other opportunities.
The singer also stressed the importance of artistes using their music careers as a platform to build other ventures.

“There are so many other things music should be able to help you branch into. I am not saying we should retire. But I am not going to be 40 and dragging the spotlight with some 20-year-old kid,” he added.
Davido’s comments come as he continues to reflect on longevity, legacy and life beyond active music.
In another recent interview, he identified knowing when to walk away from music as one of his biggest fears and said he hopes to recognise the right time to step back.
The singer has previously made comments about ending or stepping away from his music career, but his latest remarks suggest that his focus is less on a fixed retirement date and more on eventually transitioning into a different phase of his career.
