January 23, (THEWILL) – Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is expected to return to play in three to four weeks following a hamstring injury sustained while on international duty, according to Liverpool assistant manager, Pepijn Lijnders.

The 31-year-old Egyptian star suffered the injury during the Africa Cup of Nations match between Egypt and Ghana, last Thursday. Initial exams showed a proper tear in his hamstring. However, Lijnders stated on Tuesday, that if Salah’s recovery goes smoothly, he could be back on the pitch for Liverpool within a month.

Lijnders credited collaboration between Liverpool’s medical staff and Egypt’s team doctors for deciding to have Salah return to England for treatment instead of staying with the national squad.

He expressed confidence this was the best course to give Salah the optimal chance of returning before the League Cup final should Liverpool advance. The Reds currently hold a 2-1 aggregate lead heading into the second leg of their semifinal clash with Fulham.

Getting players like Salah and the returning Andy Robertson fit in coming weeks will be key as Liverpool look to claim another English Premier League title. They presently top the table by five points ahead of defending champions Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
