January 23, (THEWILL) – Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, has provided a positive injury update, suggesting he could return to action for Leicester City sooner than initially expected. Ndidi suffered a serious muscle injury earlier this month, which has kept him sidelined since the start of 2024. The injury also forced him out of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad.
The 27-year-old underwent surgery to repair the muscle two weeks ago. Initial estimates indicated Ndidi would be unavailable until April. However, when speaking on Sky Sports this week, Ndidi stated he could be back playing again within “a couple more weeks.”
Ndidi has been a vital player for Leicester this season, evidenced by their struggles without him. Since Ndidi’s absence began on January 2nd, Leicester have won just four of seven Championship matches. His box-to-box presence and defensive talents in the middle of the park have been sorely missed.
Offensively, Ndidi has contributed more than ever this season, registering an impressive 10 goal contributions across all competitions. Head coach, Enzo Maresca, has used the midfielder in a more attacking role which has boosted his attacking output.
Leicester currently sit atop the Championship table as they push for immediate promotion back to the English Premier League. Ndidi’s imminent return will come as a major boost to the club’s hopes of securing the Championships title. His energy and defensive skills should help shore up a midfield that has looked vulnerable during his injured layoff.
