September 14, (THEWILL) – Manchester United defeated Southampton 3-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium, recording only their second win in eight English Premier League away matches. The victory comes after a tough start to the 2024/2025 season for United, who had lost their first two league games.
Southampton, still without a point since returning to the top flight, dominated possession early on. Tyler Dibling, making his first start for the Saints, tested Andre Onana in the opening minutes. The 18-year-old later won a penalty, but Onana saved Cameron Archer’s spot-kick and follow-up attempt.
This proved to be a turning point. Matthijs De Ligt headed in his first goal for United from a corner, before Marcus Rashford ended his nine-game EPL goal drought with a curling shot just before half-time. United controlled the second half, with Rashford continuing to threaten.
Southampton’s struggles in front of goal persisted, and their task was made harder when Jack Stephens received a late red card for a high challenge on Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine winger added a third goal in stoppage time, sealing a comfortable win for Erik ten Hag’s side.
The result doubles United’s points tally for the season and extends their unbeaten run against Southampton to 16 matches. The Saints, meanwhile, remain in the red after four straight losses to start their return to the top flight.
