August 28, (THEWILL) — King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has died at the age of 34.
The monarch died at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, while receiving medical treatment in the United States, according to the Tooro Kingdom. His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Oyo became king in 1995 following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
He was only three years old at the time, making him the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
Because of his age, a regency was established to oversee the kingdom during his childhood. Oyo began taking on the full duties of the king when he turned 18 in 2010.
Tooro is one of several traditional kingdoms in Uganda. While these kingdoms have no formal political authority, they continue to play important cultural and social roles.
Announcing Oyo’s death, Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki described his passing as an “immeasurable loss” to the kingdom and the royal family.
Akiiki also said the royal institution would continue, revealing that Oyo left behind a Prince who is expected to succeed him. The identity of the heir will be announced in line with Tooro customs.
Although Oyo was not married, the announcement has assured the kingdom that the royal succession remains in place.
Tributes have since poured in from across Uganda, with political figures, traditional leaders and members of the public mourning the late monarch.
During his reign, Oyo supported causes including youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness. He was also a football enthusiast and supported the development of the sport in Tooro.
The Buganda Kingdom and other traditional institutions have also expressed condolences to the Tooro royal family and the people of the kingdom.
Oyo spent nearly 31 years on the throne, growing from a three-year-old king into one of Uganda’s most recognised traditional leaders.
