January 06, (THEWILL) – A few weeks ago, media mogul, Mosunmola Abudu, otherwise known as Mo Abudu announced that the sequel of her movie, Chief Daddy 2 would start showing on Netflix on January 1, 2022.
Since the movie started showing at the cinema, criticism has been trailing it.
The movie was directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and produced by Ebony Life boss, Mo Abudu.
Chief Daddy 2: Going Broke is a continuation of the movie, Chief Daddy which was released in 2018. The movie picks up on the post-funeral life of the Beecroft family, with Laila an embittered daughter of Chief Daddy surfacing from nowhere and rendering the entire family broke.
Falz, Chief Daddy’s only legitimate child and first son struggles with his one track song and almost dying music career. The fate of the Beecroft family lies in the hands of Dammy Baggio whose football career and love life suffers a tough twist.
The film features several star actors, Funke Akindele-Bello, Joke Silva, Dakore Egbuson-Akande, Rahama Sadau, Beverly Naya, Linda Ejiofor, Folarin Falana and a hosts of others.
Many have criticized the story line stating that it is disjointed and below expectations. Adding that the story has no head or tail but full of activities and noise. They stated that the producer did not give the story development a chance. No coherent storyline which gives the impression that the script writer did not watch the original version of the movie.
It was argued that the three years interval between the release of Chief Daddy 1 and Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke was enough to create time for the script writer to do a bit of research and tighten loose end to reprise the much loved movie to satisfy the fans unquenchable taste for premium entertainment.
Some stunts were also condemned as unnecessary and the entire trip to Dubai was a waste of time and resources.
Characterization in the movie was also questioned. Despite featuring star actors, the producer did not allow talent to strive but focused on using big names in the industry who were not in their best element. It made the movie overly star-studded as it parades 17 lead cast.
Some faces from the original movie were also almost non-existent in the sequel.
The lead roles were reduced to nothing short of upcoming performances, for instance, lawyer Remi Castle’s role was reduced to a dump pity party member of the family instead of taking up her role as the sound lawyer she was known for in the original movie.
No coherent character as no idea was given why Ireti and Dami Baggo seemingly abandoned their kind nature. Viewers were also not told how Tinu and Teni ended up having a joint business with Nike Williams and nothing was said about their love triangle. Ini Edo, Nkem Owoh and Patience Ozokwor were almost non-existent in the sequel.
In terms of directing, Niyi Akinmolayan’s capacity as a seasoned director was questioned. He was accused of doing a terrible job as the movie would have benefited from a better screenplay and direction.
