March 02, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa took a big step toward their first top-four English Premier League finish since 1995/1996, defeating Luton 3-2 for a third straight top-flight away victory. With the sides above them faltering Saturday, Luton had a prime chance to gain ground in the relegation fight. However, losing Amari’i Bell early proved very costly.
Villa’s pressure paid off when an unmarked Ollie Watkins headed in Leon Bailey’s corner for his 20th goal this campaign. Watkins soon found goal number 21, capitalising on a quick free kick to double Villa’s advantage.
Luton appeared re-energised after half-time and got one back from a Tahith Chong scramble. Soon after Carlton Morris powered in an equaliser off a Doughty cross. Unai Emery responded by bringing on Moussa Diaby and Lucas Digne, who combined for a dramatic 90th-minute winner.
The vital victory keeps Villa fighting for the top four but deals a serious blow to Luton’s hopes of avoiding the drop.
