August 28, (THEWILL) — Chelsea have agreed a deal worth £7.5m to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, as they look to strengthen their options between the posts.
The move for the 33-year-old Argentina international comes after Chelsea became increasingly concerned about their goalkeeping situation, with Robert Sanchez coming under scrutiny following his performance in Monday’s Premier League victory over Fulham.
Martinez has emerged as an experienced solution for Chelsea, having established himself as one of Europe’s leading goalkeepers since leaving Arsenal and becoming a key figure for both Aston Villa and Argentina.
The goalkeeper played a starring role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and has continued to build a reputation as a big-game performer.
His move to Chelsea has also been made possible by changes to the goalkeeping hierarchy at Villa Park.
Villa recently signed Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma in a deal worth almost £30m, leaving Martinez facing increased competition and needing to consider his future.

With Chelsea not competing in European football this season, the club could potentially decide that having three senior goalkeepers is unnecessary.
