September 09, (THEWILL) – Manchester City defender, Kyle Walker, spared England’s blushes with his first international goal, rescuing a 1-1 draw against Ukraine in Saturday’s Euro 2024 qualifier in Wroclaw.
The hosts took a surprise 26th minute lead through Oleksandr Zinchenko, before Walker levelled just before half-time to maintain England’s unbeaten record in Group C. Gareth Southgate’s side remain on course to qualify, but their run of four straight wins came to an end.
Despite injuries forcing Southgate into a makeshift defence, England were dominant early on. But a flowing Ukraine move saw Zinchenko lash home to delight the thousands of displaced Ukrainians in the crowd.
Walker settled English nerves when Harry Kane’s pass sent him through to finally open his international account with his 77th cap. England pushed for a winner after the break, but Bukayo Saka’s pile driver hitting the bar was as close as they came.
The point leaves England six clear of Ukraine at the top of Group C with three games left for England and four for the Ukrainians. Gareth Southgate will know the performance of his side leaves much room for improvement if they are to challenge at Euro 2024.
