July 26, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, hosted his counterpart from Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting between the West African leaders is coming when there are worrying signs of political upheaval in the Niger Republic, with which both countries share their northern borders.
Tinubu is the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and has, in that capacity, condemned the coup attempt in Niger.
Some officers of the Presidential Guard (GP), on Wednesday, blocked off President Mohamed Bazoum and his family inside the presidential palace in the country’s capital, Niamey.
President Tinubu, earlier in a statement, warned that Nigeria, along with other ECOWAS states, would resist any undemocratic attempt in Niger.
The Nigerian leader said, “I am in close consultation with other leaders in our region, and we shall protect our hard-earned democracy in line with the universally acceptable principle of constitutionalism.”
Apart from the situation in Niger, Nigeria is also in the process of fully re-opening its borders with Benin Republic.
Both issues are expected to dominate discussions between the two leaders.
