Nigerian lawmakers, Senators Ali Ndume and Awaji N. Abiante, have called for stronger legislative powers for the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), warning that its largely advisory status limits its capacity to influence implementation and hold regional institutions accountable.

The Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Senator Barau Jibrin, has urged the regional body to learn from Nigeria’s experience with farmer-herder conflicts and the humanitarian crisis they have generated.

Diop was sworn in on Monday at the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, succeeding Dr Omar Alieu Touray of The Gambia, who served as President of the Commission for four years after assuming office in 2022.
