Since Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the official kick-off of the presidential and National Assembly campaigns, and with the approaching September 9, 2026, electioneering date for the governorship and assembly candidates, three major political parties continue to dominate the polity in three vital areas: Issues, personality, and mobilisation.

Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has hosted his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other candidates of the party at the Obidient Headquarters in Abuja, as the party intensifies efforts to expand its political reach ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development followed allegations by the NDC that candidates it duly nominated were removed and replaced with individuals the party said were unknown to the organisation and had neither been nominated nor authorised to contest under its platform.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have traded blame over alleged substitution of candidates in the latest publication of names of candidates for the governorship and Assembly polls in the 2027 election.
