October 27, (THEWILL) – The Securities and Exchange Commission officially rolled out the Capital Market Masterplan 2.0, a ten-year regulatory roadmap running through 2036 designed to overhaul Nigeria’s asset formation framework.

Unveiled during the national capital market conference, the blueprint establishes a formal strategy to scale total market capitalisation from its baseline toward ₦750 trillion, anchoring economic growth in local savings rather than volatile foreign portfolio inflows.

The policy framework arrives as combined Nigerian equities and bond markets exceed ₦217 trillion, driven by a sharp rise in the All-Share Index and accelerated post-reform corporate listings.

Authorities intend to leverage this momentum to transition the financial system from short-term bank financing to long-term capital market underwriting.

Mobilising Domestic Savings Amid Macroeconomic Pressures

The core mechanism of the new masterplan centers on the National Savings Scheme, designed to aggregate retail savings, pension funds, and insurance assets into productive infrastructure projects.

Emomotimi Agama, Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, emphasized that sustainable economic expansion requires turning household capital into corporate equity and municipal debt instruments.

Success relies on maintaining secondary market liquidity, enforcing strict corporate governance, and shielding domestic investors from severe currency devaluation over the ten-year horizon.
