October 26, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) began the new trading week on a positive note on Monday, as market capitalisation rose by ₦2.641 trillion to close at ₦163.160 trillion, up from ₦160.519 trillion at the opening.
The All-Share Index (ASI) also advanced by 4,068.27 points, representing a 1.65 percent increase from its opening level of 247,222.27 to close at 251,290.54 points. The gains reflected an improvement in the overall market valuation, with the benchmark index recovering following the previous week’s marginal decline.
Despite the positive performance of the benchmark indicators, market breadth remained negative, with 25 equities appreciating in price against 30 decliners. This indicated that the market’s advance was not shared across all listed stocks.

Several equities closed unchanged during the session, including MTN Nigeria Communications, Presco Plc, Seplat Energy, John Holt Plc, Julius Berger Nigeria and Golden Guinea Breweries, among others.
The session’s performance highlighted a substantial increase in market capitalisation, supported by the advance in the All-Share Index. However, the higher number of declining equities suggests that selling pressure persisted in parts of the market even as the overall benchmark moved higher.
Looking ahead, investors will monitor whether the upward movement in the ASI and market capitalisation can be sustained in subsequent sessions. The balance between advancing and declining equities will also be important in determining whether the recovery broadens across the Exchange or remains concentrated in selected stocks. Continued buying interest in major equities could support further gains, while persistent weakness among declining stocks may limit the breadth of any recovery.
