September 21, (THEWILL) – Antonio Rudiger, a former Chelsea defender, has claimed that he purposefully made mistakes during a Chelsea game last season in an effort to engage the crowd.
The German played a key role in the Blues’ defence again last season and put on a series of outstanding performances, as the team advanced to two domestic cup finals.
After being questioned about his theatrics and running style on the field, Rudiger acknowledged that he may not have always been at his best, saying: “I’m doing it because I think I’m faster that way. If people find that amusing, I like to laugh along with them.
“Many will remember the scene you mentioned in Chelsea’s game against Newcastle last season. I’ll be honest: I deliberately made a few mistakes because it was just too quiet in the stadium for me during this game. I wanted to wake people up with it.”
It is understandable that there was a sombre atmosphere at Stamford Bridge at the time of the game because it was held just after the club, which was then owned by Roman Abramovich, had been sanctioned. In a game with little opportunities, Kai Havertz’s moment of individual brilliance delivered a crucial three points for Chelsea.
