December 06, (THEWILL) – Three players from the Nigerian women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, have been named to the shortlist for this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Football Awards, scheduled to be held on December 11, in Marrakech, Morocco. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, midfielder, Deborah Abiodun and forward, Asisat Oshoala, are finalists in their respective categories.
Nnadozie, who plays club football for Paris FC in France, is up for the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award. She is considered a standout performer for Nigeria, especially during their run in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Nnadozie is nominated along with Moroccan keeper Khadija Er-Rmichi and South Africa’s Andile Dlamini.
Abiodun, a rising talent who caught attention at the World Cup, is in contention for the CAF Young Player of the Year (Women) award. She continues to impress with the University of Pittsburgh women’s programme in the United States. The Nigerian is up against Nesryne El Chad of Morocco and Ghana defender Comfort Yeboah.
In the running for an unprecedented sixth CAF African Women’s Footballer of the Year award is Oshoala. The high-scoring Barcelona Femení forward played a key role in her club’s league title last campaign and remains a talismanic presence for Nigeria. Her fellow nominees are South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambian striker Barbra Banda.
The Super Falcons contingent will be hopeful of collecting more honours for Nigerian women’s football during the gala in Marrakech. Their nominations highlight the impression their solid run at the World Cup made across the continent and beyond.
