August 29, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich winger, Michael Olise, has been called up to the French national team for their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. The 22-year-old’s selection comes after his impressive performances at the Paris Olympics, where he helped France win a silver medal under coach Thierry Henry.
Olise, born in London to a Nigerian father and French-Algerian mother, recently joined Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace for a reported £51.5 million. His inclusion in the squad follows a successful English Premier League season where he scored 10 goals in 19 appearances.
France Manager, Didier Deschamps, praised Olise’s potential, stating: “Michael did great things with Thierry Henry’s Olympic team and he has moved up into a new category with his transfer to Bayern Munich. It is quite logical that he should now come with us.” Deschamps also called up Olympic squad member Manu Kone and Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana.
The French team will face Italy at the Parc des Princes on September 6, followed by a match against Belgium in Lyon three days later. Kylian Mbappe is set to make his first appearance for France since joining Real Madrid, while veterans like Benjamin Pavard, Kingsley Coman, and Adrien Rabiot have been left out of the squad.
France, who won the Nations League in 2021, will also play Israel in League A Group 2. The remaining matches are scheduled for October and November, with Les Bleus aiming to defend their title.
