October 20, (THEWILL) – Niger’s military Junta, on Thursday, foiled an attempt by ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to escape from custody.
Bazoum had been held in custody at the presidential palace in the capital Niamey since July 26, when he was overthrown by the military.
Regime’s Spokesman, Amadou Abdramane, said Bazoum attempted to flee on Thursday night with his family, cooks and security,
Abdramane said the escape bid failed and “the main actors and some of the accomplices” have been arrested and an investigation has commenced.
“The escape plan had involved Bazoum at first getting to a hideout on the outskirts of the capital Niamey. The former leader had then planned to fly out on helicopters belonging to a foreign power,” said Abdramane.
