June 5 (THEWILL) — A Texas court on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, sentenced former Catholic priest, Anthony Odiong, to life in prison after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting women under his spiritual care.
Odiong, a Nigerian-born priest who previously served in Texas and Louisiana, was convicted by a jury in Waco of criminal clergy sexual assault.
The 57-year-old was convicted on one count of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of second-degree sexual assault. He was also fined $30,000.
Under Texas law, sexual relationships between clergy members and adults under their spiritual care can be considered sexual assault because of the influence and authority held by the religious leader.
Odiong received a life sentence for the first-degree offence and two 20-year prison terms for the other charges. He will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
Prosecutors said he used his position as a priest to exploit women who turned to him for spiritual guidance.
Court evidence also showed that he fathered a child with a woman in Louisiana who had been under his spiritual direction, although no criminal charges were filed over that relationship.
Following the verdict, a Louisiana church where Odiong once served faced criticism after including a prayer intention for him in a parish bulletin without mentioning his victims.
The church later said it was praying for everyone affected by his actions, including the women involved.
Odiong’s lawyer has said he plans to appeal the conviction and sentence.
