December 23, (THEWILL) – The season opener for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), which was originally slated for December 28, has been postponed.
The Interim Management Committee (IMC), the new administrators of the league, team owners and other interested parties have all agreed to the revised date of January 8, 2023.
The implication of this rescheduling is that the new season will be shorter than the customary 38 matchday schedule.
Gbenga Elegbeleye, the IMC chairman, verified this when he stated: “The new season will be an abridged league format, and the IMC is not shifting ground on it. The January 8th kickoff has been agreed on by both parties.”
As clubs prepared to return to action after the lengthy vacation since the conclusion of the 2021/2022 season amidst the delays caused by the dissolution of the League Management Company (LMC), which previously managed the NPFL, there have been a few preseason competitions and games in recent weeks.
THEWILL recalls that the LMC was terminated by Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports, following a series of discussions with the pertinent bodies, and the Elegbeleye-led IMC was established to revamp the league.
