September 28, (THEWILL) – Manchester City’s English Premier League title defence faced another setback as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. The result extended Newcastle’s unbeaten home league run to 11 matches while City dropped points for the second consecutive game.
Newcastle started strongly, capitalising on set-pieces and exploiting City’s midfield weaknesses in Rodri’s absence. However, City broke the deadlock when Jack Grealish set up Josko Gvardiol, who scored with a well-placed shot into the far corner.
The hosts equalised early in the second half when Anthony Gordon won and converted a penalty after being fouled by Ederson Moraes. Newcastle dominated the following period, with Harvey Barnes narrowly missing a one-on-one opportunity against the City goalkeeper.
Both teams had chances to win late on, with Sean Longstaff and Bernardo Silva testing the goalkeepers, but neither side could find a winner. The draw leaves City vulnerable to losing their top spot if rivals Liverpool or Aston Villa win their upcoming matches.
Despite the result, City extended their unbeaten EPL run to 28 matches across all venues. However, manager Pep Guardiola will be concerned about dropping points in consecutive games as the campaign intensifies going into October.
