March 03, (THEWILL) – Luis Suarez finally opened his goalscoring account for Inter Miami as they thrashed Orlando City 5-0 on Sunday night.
The Uruguayan striker, who had failed to score in his first two MLS games since joining in December, netted twice inside the opening 11 minutes after being set up on both occasions by Julian Gressel.
Suarez then turned provider as he selflessly set up Rob Taylor for Inter’s third goal before Lionel Messi took centre stage. The Argentine superstar scored his first MLS goal from close range and then headed in a pinpoint cross from Suarez to round off a five-star attacking performance.
With three wins from their first three matches, Inter Miami’s star-studded lineup sit top of the Western Conference as they lay down an early marker in the 2024 season.
As well as Suarez and Messi, Inter manager Gerardo Martino started three other former Barcelona players in Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Messi. Martino himself also has strong links to the Catalan club having managed them between 2013 and 2017, guiding them to a La Liga title.
After spells back in South America with Nacional and Gremio since leaving Barcelona in 2022, 35-year-old Suarez opted to try his luck in the MLS and finally seems to be settling in after his blistering start.
Inter will face a tough test to maintain their 100% record when they travel to Nashville SC next weekend. However, on this evidence, Martino has a frighteningly good attack shaping up which could take some stopping this campaign.
