September 10, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government has completed the final outstanding component of its presidential reward to D’Tigress, with each player receiving the naira equivalent of $100,000 following Nigeria’s historic success at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
Team officials were also included in the payout, receiving $50,000 each as part of the reward package announced by President Bola Tinubu after the national women’s basketball team secured another continental title.
The National Sports Commission confirmed that the accounts of all eligible players and officials were credited on September 9, 2026, with recipients subsequently confirming that they had received the funds.
The payment effectively brings to an end the Federal Government’s commitment to D’Tigress following their record-breaking campaign.
The cash payment was only one part of the recognition promised to the team after their AfroBasket triumph.
Beyond the financial reward, every D’Tigress player and official was allocated a three-bedroom apartment in Abuja and was also approved for a national honour in the Order of the Niger.
Those elements of the package had already been delivered earlier in the year.
In February, the government formally presented the relevant apartment documents, including Certificates of Occupancy, alongside the national honours certificates. The documents and certificates were personally signed by President Tinubu.
With the cash component now paid, the government has therefore completed all the major elements of the reward promised to the team.
D’Tigress acknowledged the development on Thursday with a brief message on their official X account: “Presidential reward acknowledged.”
The NSC said the completed payment reflects the government’s commitment to recognising outstanding sporting achievements and improving the welfare of Nigerian athletes.
Historic AfroBasket dominance earned reward
D’Tigress’ reward follows one of the most remarkable runs in African basketball history.
Nigeria won the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket to claim an unprecedented fifth consecutive continental championship and seventh title overall.
The achievement extended the team’s remarkable dominance of women’s basketball on the continent and placed another major trophy alongside the successes that have established D’Tigress as Africa’s leading women’s basketball side.
That historic run prompted the Federal Government to announce the comprehensive reward package, with the cash component eventually becoming the final piece to be delivered.
The latest development also provides a contrast with another Nigerian women’s national team that received a similar presidential promise.

While D’Tigress have now received their complete package, the Super Falcons are still waiting for the financial component of their own presidential reward.
Nigeria’s senior women’s football team was promised similar benefits after winning the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
According to the NSC, the Super Falcons have already received their apartment title documents and national honours certificates, meaning two major components of their reward have been completed.
Their outstanding cash payment, however, is yet to be disbursed.
The commission said the payment is expected to be settled before the Super Falcons’ next official engagements.
The development leaves D’Tigress as the first of the two teams to have their entire presidential reward package fulfilled, while attention now shifts to when the government will complete the financial commitment made to the African champions in women’s football.
For D’Tigress, the September payment closes a reward process that began after their historic AfroBasket triumph. For the Super Falcons, it leaves one final and highly anticipated part of their own recognition still outstanding.
