November 16, (THEWILL) – Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the ATP Finals in Turin after suffering an abdominal injury during his first group match against Alexander Zverev on Sunday.
He withdrew from the match in the second set, but said later that after consulting with the doctors, he might be able to continue in the tournament.
However, he has withdrawn out of the season-ending event ahead of his second planned match on Tuesday evening, and will be replaced by Italian compatriot Jannik Sinner.
“I’ve finally decided my ATP Finals end here,” said Berrettini. “I’m devastated and I never thought I’d have to give up the most important tennis event ever held in Italy like this. Thank you for your continued support and the thousands of messages you sent me.”
The 20-year-old Sinner will meet Hubert Hurkacz on Tuesday in a rematch of the Miami Open final earlier this year, which the Pole won in straight sets.
Berrettini had qualified for the ATP Finals for the second time, having done it in London in 2019. In more comments after retiring against Zverev, he said: “The atmosphere was one of the best I ever felt in my life.
“It was unbelievable. That is probably why I feel so bad right now. Not being able to finish the match is killing me. It is just really tough to face. I really wanted to enjoy every second, that’s what we said as a team. The worst thing that could have happened, happened.”
