August 25, (THEWILL) — Veteran Nollywood actress Ronke Ojo, popularly known as Ronke Oshodi-Oke, has sparked reactions online after openly discussing her willingness to support politicians for financial reasons.
The actress made the remarks during a recent interview with African A-List, where she was asked whether she would accept money to endorse or campaign for a politician.
Although Oshodi-Oke said she did not want to delve too deeply into Nigerian politics, she made it clear that she did not want to be criticised if she was seen supporting a political figure.
According to the actress, Nigerians should understand that such engagements can sometimes be about survival and the need to make a living.
“My people, if you see me standing behind any politician, know that Ronke wants to eat. She is looking for something to put food on the table. Just leave me, let me eat. Do not insult or drag me.”
Her comments have renewed attention on her previous involvement in politics.
Oshodi-Oke has previously admitted to collecting money to campaign for the All Progressives Congress (APC), explaining that she initially supported the party because she believed it would improve Nigeria. She later expressed regret over her support, particularly following the government’s handling of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.

The actress’s latest comments also come against the backdrop of financial and personal challenges she has publicly discussed.
Oshodi-Oke recently revealed that she had battled serious health issues and spent about ₦800,000 every month on medication during her illness.
Her disclosure has provided further context to her argument that she needs opportunities that can help her meet her financial responsibilities.
Her position, however, has divided opinion among Nigerians. While some praised her for being candid about the financial realities that can influence celebrities and other public figures, others argued that financial hardship should not determine the political messages delivered to a large audience.

One X user, @TheIgboWolf, responded to the actress, saying:
“My dear Aunty Ronke, if you see me insulting or dragging you for endorsing any useless politician, just look away cause I want daily bread to be available to everyone; please try to understand.”
Another user, @Phatbabeluuu, praised the actress for being straightforward, writing:
“At least she is honest, not the ones that lie that shigidi has done so well.”
@FavoredSinner also acknowledged her honesty but linked the situation to the wider political system, writing:
“At least she’s being honest. But the same politicians giving you money during election season are often part of the reason you’re desperate for that money in the first place. They keep you hungry for years, then remember you need to eat when they need your vote. The goal should be to support a politician because you genuinely believe they’re good, not because they remembered your stomach weeks before an election.”
Another X user, @edozie_n, took a different view, saying:
“Na ignorance they make person abuse another person for your choice of candidate none of d candidates are better, not even single one.”
Meanwhile, @ojiehekene_ said the actress’s statement suggested that she had already been paid or expected to be paid.
He wrote:
“I have gone to look for daily bread” means she has been paid or will be paid. I am happy she’s being honest but more so because I know Peter Obi of all the contesters, doesn’t pay for support.
Another user, @damianjnrblog, was more critical of the actress, writing:
