The England captain achieved the feat during Bayern’s emphatic 7-0 victory over Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena on Friday night, converting a 39th-minute penalty to bring up his century in Germany’s top flight. The goal moved Kane past a record that had stood for almost five decades.
Kane entered the match needing just one goal to reach 100 after scoring 99 times in his first 97 Bundesliga appearances. When Michael Olise was brought down inside the penalty area, Kane stepped forward and calmly converted the resulting spot-kick, firing past Frederik Rønnow to make history.
The milestone was particularly significant because of the margin by which Kane broke the previous record.
Before Kane, Dieter Müller held the Bundesliga record for reaching 100 goals in the fewest appearances.
The former Cologne striker required 129 matches to reach the century mark in 1977. Kane has now done it in 98, meaning he needed 31 fewer appearances to reach the same milestone.
That record had remained untouched for nearly half a century, making Kane’s achievement another indication of just how extraordinary his scoring rate has been since moving to Germany.
The 33-year-old has consistently operated at a remarkable level in the Bundesliga. Before Friday’s landmark, he had been scoring at a rate of approximately one goal every 78.5 minutes since arriving from Tottenham, a rate that compares favourably with several of the division’s most prolific modern goalscorers.
And Kane was not finished after reaching his century.
He scored again in the second half, taking his Bundesliga tally to 101 goals, while Bayern continued their dominance to complete a 7-0 victory over Union Berlin.
