October 29, (THEWILL) – Erling Haaland was the star of the show as Manchester City beat rivals Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Norwegian striker scored in both halves to put City in full control before teeing up Phil Foden late on to compound United’s misery.
It was a one-sided affair as the reigning champions outclassed Erik ten Hag’s hapless side from start to finish. United were architects of their own downfall by gifting City the opener when Rasmus Hojlund was adjudged to have fouled Rodri in the box at a set piece after a VAR review. Haaland coolly converted the penalty before adding a second by nodding home unchallenged at the back post.
United were booed off by their own fans at the break after creating few clear-cut chances despite the threat of Marcus Rashford. The England forward fired their best opening over the bar while Scott McTominay forced a fine save from City shot-stopper Ederson Moraes.
However, City never looked in danger of letting their lead slip in the second period. After Foden volleyed wide, the provider turned goalscorer late on by finishing off a Haaland cut-back to round off a comfortable victory.
The 3-0 scoreline barely did City’s dominance justice as Pep Guardiola’s men underlined the gulf in class between the two Manchester clubs. For United and Ten Hag, an agonising derby defeat poses further questions over their faltering rebuild.
