September 06, (THEWILL) – Senator Nelson Effiong, immediate past National Assembly member representing Eket Senatorial District in the 8th Senate was Sunday night abducted by unknown gunmen along Oron Road, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
It was gathered that the Oron-born Senator was abducted by hoodlums numbering about four at a popular drinking spot, suspected to be his business place and taken to an unknown destination, while eight persons were seriously injured in the process.
THEWILL gathered that the eight persons who were customers sustained various degrees of injuries during a scuffle as they scampered for safety when the gunmen shot sporadically causing a stampede at the lounge .
One of the victims, Paul Ekwere now receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in Uyo said the hoodlums invaded the Lounge while they were drinking and whisked away the Senator.
“I have just been shot along Oron Road”, Poul Ekwere had cried out on social media Sunday night, urging security agencies to rescue the situation.
Speaking through the telephone on Monday, Ekwere stated. “The incident occurred at about 9:00pm on Sunday night. The armed men stormed the sit-out with a Toyota Camry car and started shooting sporadically , sending the customers and other guests to scamper for safety before they made straight to the former Senator”.
Effiong; a former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, was reportedly squeezed into the Toyota Camry to an unknown destination.
A family source disclosed that the abductors are yet to establish contact with the family for ransom or anything.
Meanwhile , the Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom SP Odiko Mcdon has confirmed the incident and promised that the command would do all within its powers to ensure that Se. Effiong is released as soon as possible.
“We have received that sad report. The Commissioner of Police Andrew Amiengheme is miffed about it and had promised to spare no resources in ensuring his safe rescue and perpetrators brought to book”. MacDon assured.
