Gladbach’s Sommer Joins Bayern On Two-and-a-half-year Deal

January 19, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich have signed Switzerland international goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Monchengladbach on a two-and-a-half-year deal for a reported fee of €8 million.

The move comes after Bayern captain Manuel Neuer was ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken leg sustained while skiing in December. It is good business for Bayern as the 34-year-old keeper has been one of the top-performing goalkeepers in the German league during his time at Gladbach, making 272 appearances in the Bundesliga.

His save percentage of 71.1 is the seventh-best among goalkeepers to make 10 or more appearances in the league over the past eight seasons, and his 70 clean sheets rank him similarly to Neuer. This season, Sommer boasts the second-best save percentage (77.1) in the league behind Union Berlin’s Frederik Ronnow.

Speaking about his transfer to Bayern, Sommer said, “I’m really looking forward to my new role at Bayern. It’s a big club with power, we’ve often played against each other – I know about the enormous quality and charisma of this club. I’m proud to be part of Bayern now. We have big tasks ahead of us. I’m really looking forward to the start with my new colleagues and to everything that’s coming.”

Sommer will likely make his debut for Bayern when they restart their campaign against RB Leipzig on Friday.
