July 16, (THEWILL) – The Diocesan Bishop of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Diocese of Calabar, His Lordship, Most Rev. Professor Nneoyi Ekpe, says Nigeria’s Leaders Take decisions for their own interest.
Rev Ekpe disclosed this in Calabar while reacting to the state of the nation, as part of the celebration of the Eleventh Synod of the church.
Speaking on the fuel subsidy challenge, the cleric said no right-thinking person will support it.
He said the citizenry always bears the brunt of policies like this and this subsidy removal is meant to feed some people’s greed.
“Many Nigerians have been aware of the level of corruption and criminality surrounding fuel subsidy over the years.
“No right-thinking person will support this. While we commend its removal, we are very opposed to the lack of adequate preparation for the action. And coming in its wake is the increase in electricity tariff.
“Again, what has the government put in place to ameliorate the pains borne by Nigerians? I heard someone saying recently that the suffering is for a while, and Nigerians will soon enjoy!
“That was what they said when SAP was introduced. And for every one of similar decisions of government, the Nigerian masses have borne the brunt thereof.
“See, I have come to the conclusion that the people that rule us do not take decisions for the good of the nation and her people, but for their own interest.
“An example is the former President shelving the removal of fuel subsidy SO THAT HIS PARTY WILL WIN ELECTIONS! Is there any reason to believe that these subsidy removals are not meant to feed some few people’s greed?
“I tell you the truth, at the rate we are going, the government will soon make Nigerians pay for the air we breathe”, Rev. Nneoyi said.
He said Nigeria can only thrive as a truly federal country and appealed to those in power to engineer the emergence of a truly federal republic.
This year’s synod has a theme, ‘SEE’, and the Diocesan Bishop said they expect that the Lord will “open” and expand our ability to see things as he sees them.
