June 16, (THEWILL) – The Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE) chapter of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), has joined its counterparts on a four-week strike.

This was made known in a release jointly signed by Chairman of COEASU, Alvan Chapter; Dr (Mrs) Jovita Ogu and the Secretary, Dr James Akaraonye, dated June 15, 2022.

According to them, the union embarked on industrial action in compliance with decision reached by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union at Federal Government of Education (Technical), Asaba, to resume the Nationwide strike, which they said, was suspended in December, 2018 due to the failure of the Federal Government to implement its agreement with the COEASU since 2010.

Dr Ogu noted that the contending issues include; Non-payment of outstanding promotion arrears from 2016 to date, Non-payment of responsibility allowance to Librarians, Refusal of the Federal Government to mainstream Demonstration School Staff in the payroll of the colleges.

“Poor funding of Colleges of Education and poor conditions of service across State-owned Colleges of Education, Non- release of N15 billion approved by the Federal Government out of N456,599,691,919. N18 billion revitalisation fund recommended for both Federal and State Colleges of Education.”

It further disclosed that Non-implementation of 2014 Needs Assessment Report in Colleges of Education in Nigeria and Non-implementation of the consequential effect on Lower Cardre (Migration) since 2018, are reasons the union embarked on strike.
