The ownership transition gives Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, full control of the club.
September 17, (THEWILL) – Clearlake Capital has taken full control of Chelsea Football Club after acquiring the ownership interests held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, marking a major change in the ownership structure of the Premier League club.
Chelsea confirmed the transition on Wednesday, September 16, announcing that affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group would acquire Boehly’s ownership interest before also completing the purchase of Walter’s stake.
“As part of the transition, Clearlake will also acquire Mark Walter’s ownership interest and therefore acquire full control of the Club,” Chelsea said in its statement.
The development brings an end to the ownership arrangement established in 2022, when a consortium involving Clearlake, Boehly, Walter and Wyss completed the purchase of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.
Before the latest transaction, Clearlake held a 61.5 per cent stake in the club, while Boehly, Walter and Wyss each held minority interests.

Boehly Leaves Chairman Role
Alongside the ownership transition, Boehly has left his position as chairman of Chelsea.
In a statement quoted by the club, Boehly thanked those involved in his tenure, including the Premier League, Chelsea’s coaches and players, staff and supporters.
“It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of Chelsea Football Club,” Boehly said.
He also expressed confidence in the club’s future under Clearlake’s leadership, while thanking the ownership group for its partnership and the investment made during their time together.
Boehly became one of the most prominent figures in Chelsea’s ownership after the consortium’s takeover in 2022.
The American businessman subsequently served as chairman as the club underwent significant changes in its sporting and commercial operations.
Clearlake’s New Era
Clearlake’s takeover of full control places Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, the firm’s co-founders and managing partners, at the centre of Chelsea’s ownership structure.
The club said Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner despite Boehly and Walter’s departures.
Clearlake had already been the largest shareholder and had significant operational involvement in the club.

The latest agreement therefore represents a shift to a single controlling ownership group rather than the creation of an entirely new ownership structure.
The Financial Times reported that the transaction values Chelsea at approximately £5 billion including debt, with Boehly and Walter’s combined stake valued at about £950 million.
Chelsea itself did not disclose the financial terms in its announcement.

What Comes Next For Chelsea?
The change comes as Chelsea continues to pursue investment in its football infrastructure and long-term sporting development.
Clearlake has indicated that its focus will remain on investment in the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development.
Chelsea’s ownership transition also follows several years of major spending and structural changes since the 2022 takeover.
The immediate significance of the deal is therefore not a change of club ownership from one outside group to another, but the consolidation of control within Clearlake Capital.
For Chelsea, the next phase will be shaped by how the new controlling ownership structure manages the club’s sporting ambitions, infrastructure projects and wider business operations following Boehly’s departure.
