September 16, (THEWILL) – The EFL Cup delivered another dramatic night on Wednesday as Manchester United threw away a two-goal advantage at Old Trafford, Tammy Abraham rediscovered his scoring touch for Aston Villa, Everton left it late against Wolves, and Fleetwood Town pulled off one of the round’s biggest surprises.
United looked to be cruising after Shea Lacey and Mason Mount struck inside the opening 10 minutes, but Brighton completely changed the contest after the interval. Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back just before half-time, before Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper completed the comeback to send Fabian Hürzeler’s side into the fourth round.
Manchester United 2-3 Brighton: Another Old Trafford Collapse
Manchester United’s difficult start to the season took another turn as they surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 against Brighton and crash out of the EFL Cup.
The home side could hardly have asked for a better beginning. Academy graduate Shea Lacey opened the scoring after just eight minutes with his first senior start, before Mason Mount doubled United’s advantage two minutes later. Mount reacted quickest after Marcus Rashford’s effort came back into his path, giving United what appeared to be a comfortable early cushion.
Brighton, however, refused to disappear from the contest. Kostoulas gave the visitors a lifeline in first-half stoppage time, and that goal completely altered the momentum heading into the second half.
United struggled to regain control after the break, with Brighton becoming increasingly dangerous around the penalty area. Gross was given too much space on the edge of the box and made United pay in the 65th minute, bringing the visitors level.
Just four minutes later, Brighton completed the turnaround. Maxim De Cuyper finished the move to put the Seagulls 3-2 ahead, leaving United with little time to respond.
Michael Carrick attempted to change the game by introducing Bruno Fernandes with 18 minutes remaining and later bringing on Matheus Cunha, but Brighton held firm. Jason Steele also produced an important save to deny Rashford as United searched desperately for an equaliser.
The defeat is another setback for Carrick, coming only three days after United lost the Manchester derby 1-0 to 10-man Manchester City. United’s elimination also continues a worrying domestic cup sequence after their League Two defeat by Grimsby Town last season and their FA Cup loss to Brighton in January.
For Brighton, the comeback represented another impressive display of resilience at a stadium where they have increasingly enjoyed success.
Coventry City 1-3 Aston Villa: Abraham Makes His Chance Count
Tammy Abraham responded emphatically to his uncertain position at Aston Villa by scoring twice in a 3-1 victory over Coventry City.
Abraham was handed his first start of the season after spending the opening weeks competing for opportunities following the arrival of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea. The striker had reportedly rejected loan opportunities during the summer in order to remain at Villa and fight for his place.
His decision paid off on Wednesday night.
Abraham opened the scoring after only seven minutes, giving Villa an early advantage before Ross Barkley doubled the lead in the 40th minute. Coventry briefly threatened a comeback when Victor Torp produced a superb free-kick to make it 2-1.
Villa remained composed, though, and Abraham restored their two-goal advantage in the 59th minute to complete his brace.
Both of Villa’s goals from Abraham and Barkley came from set-piece situations, highlighting an area of Coventry’s defending that Unai Emery’s side was able to exploit repeatedly.
Emery made seven changes from the side beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, giving opportunities to several players including Ibrahim Mbaye, Matteo Ruggeri and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
For Abraham, the night was particularly significant. He had made only limited appearances this season and had scored just once in his previous 16 games before Wednesday. His two-goal performance now gives Emery another selection option as Villa prepare for the next stage of the competition.
Coventry, meanwhile, suffered their fifth defeat in six matches in all competitions, continuing a difficult start to life back in the Premier League.
Everton 1-0 Wolves: Alcaraz Delivers Late
Everton needed patience before finally breaking Wolves’ resistance, with Charly Alcaraz scoring in the 80th minute to secure a 1-0 victory.
David Moyes made six changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Tottenham, while Wolves rotated even more heavily, making nine changes from their Championship victory over Sheffield United.
The changes made for a cagey contest, with neither side able to find a breakthrough for much of the evening. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was called upon to make an important save from Adam Armstrong, while Wolves goalkeeper João VirgÃnia also produced a strong stop to deny Thierno Barry.
Everton eventually found the decisive moment through Alcaraz, who converted from an assist by Thierno Dibling to settle the contest.
It was a particularly memorable goal for Alcaraz because he had played only 14 minutes all season before Wednesday’s match. His previous goal had also come in the EFL Cup, against Mansfield 13 months earlier.
Jack Grealish also made his first Everton start since January after returning from Manchester City on loan and played 76 minutes.
The victory extends Everton’s unbeaten start to the campaign after six matches and sends Moyes’ side into the fourth round, where they will face Newcastle United.

The decisive moment arrived in the 57th minute when Rhys Norrington-Davies turned the ball into his own net, handing Fleetwood the lead.
Sheffield United had opportunities to respond but could not find a way through a determined Fleetwood defence. Danny Andrew had already seen an effort ruled out for offside, while Fleetwood also struck the woodwork twice during a lively contest.
Andrew eventually played a role in the winning goal when his cross caused problems inside the Sheffield United penalty area, with Norrington-Davies unable to prevent the ball from ending up in his own net.

Facing opposition from a division higher, Fleetwood showed enough defensive discipline to protect their advantage and see out the game, securing a place among the final 16 teams in the competition.
