August 03, (THEWILL) – Chelsea are on the verge of finalising a £25 million deal with Brighton and Hove Albion for the transfer of Spanish goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.
The transfer is set to provide stiff competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga, following Edouard Mendy’s departure to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli. Sanchez, a 25-year-old Spain international, previously worked with Chelsea goalkeeping coach, Ben Roberts, during his time at Brighton, making the move to Stamford Bridge easier.
Newly-appointed Blues manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is actively revamping his squad after a disappointing season. As part of this overhaul, Chelsea have been linked with a potential move for Seagulls midfielder, Moises Caicedo, with Brighton reportedly seeking a £100 million fee for the talented player.
Meanwhile, French forward, Christopher Nkunku, who joined Chelsea in a £63 million switch from RB Leipzig, is being closely monitored due to a knee problem sustained during the final game of the club’s pre-season tour in the United States against Borussia Dortmund. Pochettino addressed the situation, stating: “The doctors are checking him, and I hope it is not a big issue… We need a few days to assess him.”
The imminent arrival of Robert Sanchez will undoubtedly bolster Chelsea’s goalkeeping options, providing healthy competition for the starting spot. The deal signifies Pochettino’s proactive approach in reshaping the team, aiming to bounce back from their disappointing run. While potential moves for other players are being explored, the focus remains on Nkunku’s fitness as the Blues prepare for their Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 13.
