December 16, (THEWILL) – Chelsea earned an important 2-0 victory over Sheffield United F.C. on Saturday, securing back-to-back home wins in the English Premier League for the first time since October 2022. The Blues overcame a lacklustre first half to dominate the Blades after the break.
The match started slowly with few genuine chances created by either side. Sheffield defended well to frustrate the Chelsea attack early on. It was not until the 54th minute when Raheem Sterling broke down the right wing, cutting the ball back for Cole Palmer to slam home from close range. Chelsea took control of the contest following their opener.
In bizarre circumstances, Nicolas Jackson added a second goal for the home side soon after. While debates may follow over a potential Chelsea penalty, Palmer seized on Sheffield’s hesitation to set up Jackson for an easy finish. The visitors argued James McAtee had run the ball out of play in the build-up, but the goal stood.
Sheffield thought they had pulled one back late on after William Osula netted, but it was disallowed with replays showing McAtee had indeed run possession outside before crossing. Chelsea then missed a golden chance to extend the lead when Armando Broja fired over unbelievably from point-blank range.
Ultimately, Chelsea did enough after the interval to put their home struggles behind them and climb into the top half of the EPL table. The win leaves Sheffield still rock bottom after 17 matches.
