September 28, (THEWILL) – Former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain defender, Sergio Ramos, was the victim of a burglary at his Spanish home while he was playing for Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League last week.
The 37-year-old was away playing Sevilla’s opening group stage match against Lens on 20 September, when thieves broke into his house in Bollullos de la Mitación. Ramos’ four children were at home with childminders at the time, while his wife was also away, but fortunately no one was hurt during the incident.
Burglaries at footballers’ homes have become increasingly common in recent years, with a number of high-profile stars across Europe’s top leagues falling victim. Just this year, 15 cases have been reported including Ramos’ former Real Madrid teammate, Lucas Vazquez and manager, Zinedine Zidane. English Premier League side, Manchester United, have also been hit hard, with a 2022 break-in at Victor Lindelof’s house being one of the most recent examples.
For Ramos, the robbery caps a difficult start to his return to Sevilla, following 18 years away. Despite great success at Real Madrid, where he won the UCL four times and La Liga five times, things have not gone smoothly since he came back to his hometown club from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer.
The defender, who is also Spain’s most capped male international, would have hoped his homecoming might go more smoothly. But on and off the pitch, patience may still be required, as he looks to rediscover his best form with Sevilla.
