September 28, (THEWILL) – Chelsea’s injury worries grew on Thursday night, as Ben Chilwell limped off late in their 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Brighton and Hove Albion. The England left-back is set for scans on a suspected hamstring problem, adding to manager Mauricio Pochettino’s defensive headaches.
As THEWILL reported, Nicolas Jackson’s second-half goal was enough to earn Chelsea just their third win in all competitions this season. However, the victory came at a cost, as Chilwell was forced off in stoppage time after suffering an apparent hamstring issue.
“We need to assess it tomorrow, but I think it is hamstring,” Pochettino confirmed after the match. Chilwell had been given a rare start against Brighton, having failed to begin either of Chelsea’s last two league games.
Pochettino named three left-backs in his line-up, with Marc Cucurella at right-back and Ian Maatsen on the right wing. But he will hope Chilwell has avoided serious injury as Chelsea face a hectic run of fixtures.
The Blues are already without several key players due to injury and suspension. Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile and Reece James remain sidelined. James is also facing an FA ban for alleged abusive language. Chelsea are back in action on Monday away to Fulham in the English Premier League.
