October 26, (THEWILL) – An 83% profit increase can sit in the same accounts as a weakening quarter, and a ₦1.47 trillion market rebound can still leave investors nursing weekly losses. Both feature in Nigeria’s latest financial reports.

This week, reading only the biggest number could mean overlooking rising company costs, misjudging a recovery or buying too late to qualify for a dividend.

Here are ten developments to watch before committing money.

1. Unilever’s Dividend Deadline Arrives on Friday

Unilever Nigeria has declared an interim dividend of ₦2 per ordinary share, subject to withholding tax.

Shareholders must appear on its register at close of business on October 30, with payment scheduled for November 18. A holding of 1,000 qualifying shares would generate ₦2,000 before tax.

Existing shareholders should check their e-dividend mandates with Greenwich Registrars.

Prospective buyers should confirm the settlement timetable with their brokers, since the qualification date is not automatically the last eligible purchase date. Transaction costs and subsequent share-price movements also affect the investment’s total return.

2. NGX Group’s Latest Quarter Deserves a Separate Reading

NGX Group reported ₦20.58 billion in nine-month pretax profit, up approximately 83.3%. However, third-quarter operating expenses increased 62.6%, outpacing revenue growth of 36.4%. Quarterly operating profit consequently fell 3.6% to ₦4.25 billion, while profit after tax declined 7.1% to ₦4.33 billion, calculated from its unaudited accounts.

The exchange owner’s cumulative growth therefore needs to be assessed alongside its recent cost pressures. Investors should examine management’s explanations and the expense breakdown before assuming the nine-month growth rate describes current earnings momentum.

3. Friday’s Stock-Market Recovery Needs Wider Support

NGX - Stocks - EquitiesThe NGX All-Share Index gained 0.92% on Friday, helped by 10% increases in Dangote Cement and FirstHoldCo. Despite that recovery, it ended the week 0.13% lower at 247,222.27 points. Across the week, 55 stocks declined against 20 gainers.

This week’s test is how many companies attract sustained buying. An index lifted mainly by a few heavyweight stocks provides limited reassurance to investors whose holdings sit elsewhere in the market.

4. Oil Above $116 Puts Business Costs Under Scrutiny

Brent crude settled at $116.72 a barrel on Friday, gaining 6% over the week. Saudi Arabia’s benchmark stock index then fell 2.7% on Sunday amid renewed Saudi-Houthi fighting.

Reports of attacks and interceptions do not independently establish the volume of oil production disrupted.

For Nigerian businesses, confirmed delivery interruptions, freight charges and current refinery or depot quotations are the practical indicators.

Higher crude prices can support export receipts while increasing petroleum-product costs for transport operators, manufacturers and households.

5. The Naira’s Published Rates Require Careful Comparison

The CBN’s October 23 table recorded the volume-weighted NFEM rate at ₦1,361.8394 per dollar, separately from a ₦1,370 closing rate.

These represent different measures within the same market; neither automatically equals the rate available for an individual customer’s transaction.

Importers and companies meeting foreign obligations should compare executable bank quotations, including charges.

For investors holding dollar assets, exchange-rate movements can also change the naira value of their holdings independently of the underlying investment’s performance.

6. Higher Bond Yields Raise the Hurdle for Other Investments

Nigeria’s October bond auction cleared at 16.99% for February 2034, 17.29% for September 2036 and 17.19% for June 2038, according to MarketForces Africa’s report. Each clearing rate increased from its previous auction level.

Those yields provide another reference point when comparing equities, deposits and fixed-income investments.

However, coupon rates and purchase yields differ, while investors who sell bonds before maturity remain exposed to changes in market prices.

7. Banking Shares Are Moving in Different Directions

Fidelity Bank Plc

Fidelity Bank gained 14.01% over the week, while Access Holdings fell 7.02%, UBA declined 5.35% and Zenith Bank lost 2.85%, according to First Securities. The divergence shows why a general view of the banking sector is insufficient for judging individual holdings.

As investors assess financial results, attention should extend to funding costs, loan impairments, and the sources of profit. A strong earnings figure deserves closer examination if a substantial portion comes from gains that may not recur.

8. Food Inflation Still Squeezes Consumer Spending

InflationNigeria’s annual headline inflation slowed to 14.63% in September from 15.39% in August, but food inflation edged up to 19.59% from 19.57%, according to NBS figures reported by Reuters. Slower headline inflation therefore does not mean equivalent relief at the food market.

For consumer-goods companies and retailers, sales volumes will help reveal how customers are responding. L

Revenue can rise because products cost more even when shoppers buy fewer items, making volumes and margins essential companions to the headline sales figure.

9. OPay’s Proposed IPO Awaits Final Pricing

OPay has proposed a US offering price of $19–$21 per American Depositary Share, targeting a valuation of up to $4.42 billion, Reuters reported on October 23.

Stanbic Africa Holdings has separately agreed to invest up to $200 million through a concurrent private placement.

Final pricing, allocation, and completion announcements are the next checkpoints. The proposed terms do not establish the eventual market price, and owning an OPay payments account does not itself confer access to the offering.

10. Wednesday’s Fed Decision Could Reprice Dollar Exposure

The US Federal Reserve meets October 27–28, with its decision scheduled for 7 p.m. Nigerian time on Wednesday and its press conference at 7.30 p.m., converted from the Fed’s published Eastern schedule.

The announcement can influence dollar financing costs and demand for emerging-market assets. Its effect will depend partly on how the decision and guidance compare with market expectations.

Nigerian companies with dollar obligations should follow their lenders’ actual terms, while investors should account for both asset-price and currency movements.
