July 14, (THEWILL) -Arsenal has finalised the signing of Dutch international defender, Jurrien Timber, from Ajax, for a reported fee of £38 million.
The signing marks the Gunners’ continued efforts to bolster their squad, as they prepare for the upcoming season in the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Timber, who has signed a five-year contract, becomes Mikel Arteta’s second notable addition this summer.
Expressing his satisfaction with the deal, Arsenal sporting director, Edu, stated: “We are delighted to welcome Jurrien to Arsenal. He is a player we have long admired, and we commend our team for making this happen. Jurrien is a young and talented international player, who aligns with our vision of building a competitive and youthful squad. We have high hopes that he will thrive and achieve great success with us.”
Arteta also enthused about the signing: “We are thrilled to have Jurrien join us. He is a versatile and talented young defender, who will seamlessly fit into our system and enhance the quality of our squad. Despite his age, Jurrien has already accomplished a great deal, with multiple international tournaments and trophies won with Ajax. We eagerly await his integration into our team.”
Timber, who featured in 44 matches for Ajax last season in the centre-back position, exhibited an impressive performance individually. Despite Ajax’s disappointing third-place finish, Timber excelled statistically, ranking among the Eredivisie’s top 1% of centre-backs in various categories such as progressive passes, shot-creating actions, and successful passes. These qualities on the ball caught the attention of several top EPL clubs including Manchester United last year.
