Real Madrid Extend La Liga Lead With Narrow Win Over Sociedad

April 27, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga to 14 points with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday. Despite being outplayed for large periods, Carlo Ancelotti’s side ground out another crucial three points.

The hosts started brightly and had opportunities through Takefusa Kubo and Mikel Oyarzabal, whose penalty claims were waved away by the referee. Against the run of play, Real took the lead through Arda Guler’s cool finish after a precise Nacho Fernandez cross on the half-hour mark.

Sociedad thought they had equalised early in the second half when Kubo finished calmly, but the goal was ruled out for a foul by Ander Barrenetxea on Aurelien Tchouameni. The home side continued to dominate but were denied by strong keeping from Kepa Arrizabalaga and unfortunate offside calls.

Despite late pressure from Oyarzabal, Kubo and Sheraldo Becker, Real Sociedad could not find an equaliser, slipping to just one home win in eight games. The result sees Real Madrid’s unbeaten league run extend to 27 matches as they close in on a 36th Spanish title.
