January 10, (THEWILL) – Barely had the dust settled over the controversy surrounding an alleged failed plot by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Service is again rocked by another scandal, but this time, involving Aisha Bichi, wife of the Director General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi.
Mrs Bichi was reportedly involved in an altercation with the Kano State governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Abba Yusuf, at the VIP lounge of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, on Sunday night, January 8.
According to a source familiar with the incident, Yusuf’s convoy had caused traffic congestion, which prevented Bichi’s convoy from gaining access to the VIP lounge.
This, it was gathered, prompted her security details to step into the situation to clear the path, which in the process, led to a confrontation between the security details and aides of the gubernatorial candidate.
The situation, however, degenerated when Yusuf approached Mrs. Bichi over the incident.
“The trouble started at the gate of the VIP lounge of the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano when the motorcade of the politician caused traffic, which delayed Bichi’s convoy from gaining entry into the controlled area.
“The action really angered Bichi as her security guards started beating up people and hitting vehicles for blocking the VIP gate
“The situation escalated after she told Abba that they will not board the same flight as earlier scheduled, and she spotted one of his aides, Garba Kilo, filming.
“Although the state Director of Service attempted to calm her down, she continued pouring the expletives.
“The DSS DG’s wife actually ordered the arrest of the Kano governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Abba Yusuf, and barred him from boarding an Air Peace flight from Kano to Abuja, on the fateful Sunday night,” an eyewitness told the media, adding that the DSS operatives released Yusuf after the flight took off with the DG’s wife.
However, the Spokesperson for the DSS, Peter Afunanya, in response to enquiries on the issue, said nothing of such happened. He described the reports as baseless gossip.
“Not true, cheap and baseless gossip not worth the attention of anyone, professional journalist or newspaper,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Action People’s Party (APP), has called for the arrest of Yusuf Bichi, following his wife’s alleged attack on Abba Yusuf.
APP National Chairman, Uche Nnadi, in a statement on Monday, lamented the continued stay in office of the DSS DG.
According to Nnadi, recent accusations trailing the secret service agency in the past weeks, pose a threat to President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise of free and fair elections.
He recalled the discovery of a secret suit before an Abuja court, eventually thwarted, filed by the DSS, seeking the arrest of CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over trumped-up allegations of terrorism financing.
Nnadi decried the unwarranted attacks, especially the alleged detention of the Kano NNPP governorship candidate, Abba Yusuf, on the orders of the DG’s wife, Aisha, and the attack on the President of Middle Belt Youth Forum and PDP House of Assembly Candidate in Kogi State, Godwin Meliga.
