Akwa Ibom Police Warn Against Falsehood, Incitement Over Security Issues

October 02, (THEWILL) – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has warned residents, political actors and social media users against circulating false information, and fabricated narratives capable of undermining peace and security in the state.

The command, in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, said it had observed with concern the circulation of what it described as misinformation and deliberate falsehood concerning recent developments in the state.

According to the command, such narratives could confuse members of the public, create unnecessary tension, incite hostility, and threaten the prevailing peace in Akwa Ibom.

The police therefore urged members of the public, political actors, commentators, and content creators to verify information before publishing or circulating it, warning against presenting speculation, hearsay, or fabrication as facts.

The command stressed that it remained committed to protecting the fundamental rights of citizens, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, but said such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.

“The police will not allow deliberate falsehood, incitement or threats to be used to undermine public peace.

“Our responsibility is to protect lives and property while ensuring that lawful rights are respected,” John said in an exclusive interaction with THEWILL.

The command maintained that freedom of expression should not be used as a licence for deliberate falsehood, incitement, threats, intimidation, or any conduct capable of provoking violence or disturbing public order.

It further assured residents that the Nigeria Police Force remained a professional institution guided by the constitution, applicable laws and established procedures in carrying out its responsibility to prevent crime and maintain public order.

The command said it would continue to discharge its duties fairly, firmly and impartially, stressing that no individual, group or political interest would receive preferential treatment.

It also said no person would be subjected to arbitrary action based on sentiment, political affiliation or unfounded allegations.

The police warned that anyone whose conduct constituted an offence would be investigated and dealt with in accordance with due process, irrespective of status, affiliation or influence.

The command urged residents to assess public issues based on available facts and avoid conclusions driven by ethnicity, political affiliation, personal interests or preconceived biases.

It appealed to residents to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding and rely on credible and official sources for information on security developments in the state.

The command reaffirmed that Akwa Ibom remained peaceful and pledged to remain professional and impartial in its efforts to sustain the peace and security of the state.
