BEVERLY HILLS, August 12, (THEWILL) – An election to elect a new Governor and deputy for Adamawa State has been scheduled for October 11, 2014, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
INEC’s Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner, Kasim Gaidam, who made the announcement on Tuesday, said the election was scheduled in compliance with the Electoral Act, which mandates the commission to conduct a by-election into the office of a Governor within three months of vacancy.
“The commission has confirmed the Adamawa governorship election to hold on October 11, 2014. Details of the election would be disclosed subsequently,” the INEC chief said.
The Adamawa House of Assembly had impeached Governor Murtala Nyako after a panel found him guilty of allegations of financial misconduct amongst several other charges. His deputy, Mr. James Ngilari, resigned to avoid impeachment.
The assembly on August 4, 2014, formally informed INEC in a letter of the vacancy at the Executive branch of government.
“You may wish to be informed that the Honourable House of Assembly on the 15th of July 2014, pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) impeached the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako.
“The Deputy Governor, Barrister Bala James Ngilarri, on the 15th of July 2014, in accordance with the provisions of Section 306 tendered his resignation letter, which was accepted by the former Governor before his impeachment.
“In compliance with the provisions of Section 191(2) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Honourable Speaker of the House of Assembly was sworn-in as the Acting Governor of the state,” the Speaker, Hon. Kwamoti Laori, wrote.
